Despite contributing to Miles Davis’ Milestones and Kind Of Blue, a visionary like John Coltrane was never going to be confined within the constraints of someone else’s band for long. Over a short period, the pair helped forge an entirely new musical lexicon together and despite their at times tempestuous relationship, Davis convinced Coltrane to re-join him for a final tour of Europe in 1960. There are some audio quality issues over the four discs of this document of live gigs, radio sessions and private recordings, but to hear the ease and dexterity with which two of the greatest musicians of the 20th century fly both in tandem and opposition with one another over charged performances of some of their best-known material is nothing short of breathtaking.
