Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui and her multicultural ensemble take the art of song to sparkling heights on Arco Iris. With a fiercely poetic benevolence and a natural approach to blending fado, flamenco, and Al Andalusi influences (to say little of Alaoui’s own), she evokes cultures that, while far in place and time, feel as close to us as our own skins. Fans of any of the above genres wanting a fresh unearthing of their ancient roots need look no further. This album feels like home, even if it evokes a place you’ve never visited.
