Cape Fear is Martin Scorsese’s virtuoso remake of a 1960s psychological horror film, one full of ironic self-awareness of the horror-movie cliches out of which it is fashioned. Herrmann’s score, taken from the original film and inserted into the new one, is both campily over-the-top and thrillingly tense, an able partner in crime to Scorsese’s frenetic cutting and zooming.
