Disintegration

Released

The Cure switched from multifaceted to monolithic once more when it came time for their Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me followup, with a series of songs that were mostly minor-key, very long and shrouded in darker moods and textures — and ended up with their biggest album yet. Disintegration showed the Cure’s pop knack remained intact, as “Fascination Street,” “Lullaby” and especially the smash hit “Lovesong” showed, but the majestic melancholy of “Plainsong,” “Pictures of You,” “The Same Deep Water as You” and the title track ultimately reigned supreme.
