All three of these legends play things we don’t entirely associate them with. All three went on to be thought of (rightly) as synth pioneers but here, Edgar Froese plays organ mostly, Conrad Schnitzler plays a lot of guitar, and Klaus Schulze plays drums (though there is plenty of switching instruments). A lot like Kluster, this band come out of the gate swinging. No ambient music here—just chaos from top to bottom. “Journey Through A Burning Brain” and “Cold Smoke” are titles they absolutely make good on. Considering how careful their later work is, it is important to give credit to this album for being such a massive fuck you to everyone, including themselves. There is a slice or two here that is just Guitar Center blues wank with no merit, and that will abut pure Poseidon roar.
