First emerging on London’s WerkDiscs in 2007, as the seeds of “post dubstep” were being sown in a fervid climate of cross-fertilisation, Luke Blair aka Lukid stood out a mile from the crowd of bass-heavy experimenters around him. His beats seemed lo-fi yet hit hard and had an endlessly sophisticated internal logic. They had enough heartbroken sentiment to sit next to Burial, enough rooting in raw funk, house and electro to be compatible with the likes of Funkineven, and enough futurist soundsystem power to appeal to the dubstep crowd. His second WerkDiscs album, later transplanted to his own GLUM imprint, was his breakthrough masterpiece — and still sounds extraordinary years later. Like the very greatest electronic music it feels simultaneously very ancient and very futuristic. A murky, dirty work of high art.
