Former Disney ingenue Demi Lovato has done a lot of self-discovery the last few years, and apparently one of the things they found (besides their sexuality/gender identity and a love for the word “fuck”) was their rock n’ roll soul. Their eighth album goes shockingly heavy — especially on crunchy metal opener “Freak (feat. Yungblud),” and “Heaven,” which sounds like (the disgraced) Marilyn Manson. Even the pop punk and electropop tracks possess some serious bite. Lovato’s frank tales of lust and excess and Hollywood Babylon feel like a modern version of Joan Jett as she takes a studded baseball bat to fame’s fickle fable.
