I Have the Room Above Her

Released

Drummer Paul Motian forged a magic triangle with guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano. I Have The Room Above Her is as evocative as its title, gliding through a wealth of then-new material from the bandleader with urban charm. “Osmosis Part III” is the definitive opening statement, mixing equal parts starlight and streetlight, while “One In Three” contents itself with older technologies of illumination. Some dips into the past, including “Dance,” show the composer’s deepening spirit, while outliers like Thelonious Monk’s “Dreamland” ride a crepuscular edge. An easy album to love; impossible to imitate.
