Structural racism is sometimes subtle, but sometimes it’s very obvious: as with the fact that Scratcha DVA would be a globally revered electronic producer, rather than the cult figure he is, if he were white. He makes house bangers, he popularises South African glom, he reworks grime and UK funky into unique and peculiar forms, he can turn his hand to mutant R&B and absolutely smash it, and — as on this album — he can make deconstructed club and abstract electronica that is up there with the best of the best. This album was apparently conceived to listen to in the dark, as a mind movie about dissociation in a VR future, and it is really worth giving a go in that context. It will DO things to you.
