It’s tempting to think of Regulate…G Funk Era as the younger sibling album to The Chronic or Doggystyle but while Warren G may have literally been Dr. Dre’s younger brother and Snoop’s cousin, his talents stand on their own here. Thought clearly indebted to his elders, Warren was able to play with Dre’s g-funk sound and make it even more melodic and musical and likewise, his easy-going flow may have been reminiscent of Snoop’s but it manages to be even more laid back. Put it all together and Regulate…G Funk Era had everything it needed to be one of the all-time great backyard BBQ LPs, especially when hits like “Regulate” and “This DJ” come on.
