Perú’s Efraín Rozas has made it his mission to explore the clave and try any variation of said rhythm. Roza Cruz was conceived as a collection of improvisations around circular song structures, emphasizing addition and subtraction of instruments, which resulted in kinetic and exciting music. There’s plenty of jazzy flair to their salsa but the presence of distortion, analog electronics, and left turns makes for something completely unexpected and satisfying.
