Andsnes has the perfect touch for these solo piano works by Sibelius. His gestures are high Romantic but his moods and pacing have a nice Modernist freeze to them, and a good Sibelian knows where the music needs to spin past like branches beneath a carriage and when the chords need to fall like slate paving stones. Andsnes lights up this block of pieces and makes you forget almost instantly that you’re listening to only one instrument.
