Solid Gold

Gang of Four’s second full-length album sounds like a logical next step from Entertainment!. Interestingly, it includes two tracks originally released on the band’s self-titled EP (known to fans as the “Yellow EP”), but re-recorded with a slightly denser and heavier sound. There’s a new density to the messaging as well: “Cheeseburger” is an unsparing take on business culture (perhaps American business culture in particular), while “In the Ditch” is a typically blistering account of the military (see also “He’d Send in the Army”). Gang of Four’s political stance has never been clearer, or less forgiving, than it is on Solid Gold.
