The Berlin-based Nigerian-British promoter, activist and documentarian Chinwe Pam Nnajiuba — or just Juba — is also one of the finest DJs around, both solo and in the Boko! Boko! trio with Mina and Tash LC. In all this work, she opens up paths for artists on the margins to achieve recognition, but crucially this is done not in dry academic fashion but with all the energy of rave culture electrifying her efforts. Thus ‘Assurance.’ It began as a documentary about women DJs made with the Boiler Room broadcast channel, then became a podcast series with wider geographical remit. Finally in 2022, it spawned a compilation of female electronic musicians from across the global south. Reflecting the way that musical influence constantly flows, it’s got Brazilian music influenced by London, Durban and New York, Kenyan / South African fusion, Taiwanese techno and Vietnamese modernist-traditional fusion. And just like Boko! Boko! and Juba’s club-smashing sets, it crackles with dance power.
