Vanity 6
Released
The trio’s sole album (from 1982) is long out of print and unavailable to stream officially. Which is a shame, because these Prince-penned, performed (with vocals from the group) and produced songs are uniformly excellent. “Nasty Girl” is an outright classic, with Vanity’s coolly detached vocals adorning a grinding future-funk musical backing. “Wet Dream” and ”He’s So Dull” are new wave rock songs that walk the line between swaggering and robotic, while the icy “Make-Up” is an infectious sci-fi glam stomp. Anchored by loads of amateurish energy and charm, and expertly sung, Vanity 6 is unjustly underrated behind Prince’s more celebrated works of the era.
