Village Of The Pharoahs

Released

The third album Sanders released in 1973 (along with Wisdom Through Music and Izipho Zam, though the latter was actually recorded in 1969 and shelved), Village Of The Pharoahs was actually cobbled together from several sessions. While its three-part title suite, “Myth,” and “Went Like It Came” were all recorded in September 1973, “Mansion Worlds” was from December 1971 and “Memories Of Lee Morgan” was from November 1972. The title suite is an enthralling, enveloping mix of sounds from all over the world, North Africa and India in particular; a swinging gospel-jazz rhythm appears every once in a while, but Sanders is on a global journey here and it’s best to just follow along without thinking too much about anything beyond whether the music rules (and it does).
