When We Leave

Released

When you see that a jazz trumpeter’s album features arrangements for two drummers, violin, piano, bass, and steel guitar, you could be forgiven for approaching it with some trepidation. But this album from Norwegian trumpeter and composer Mathias Eick is absolutely lovely. The compositions tend feel a bit abstract, but in a good way — not disorganized or chaotic, just open and lyrical and spacious. Highlights include the sweetly melancholy “Turning” and a heart-tugging tribute to the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
