Where Is Brooklyn?

While in the 21st century, the borough of Brooklyn is ubiquitous in hipster culture, it was terra incognita back when Don Cherry cut his final Blue Note date in November of 1966. It also marked Cherry’s last true jazz date before striking out for the continent. Thanks in part to the presence of bassist Henry Grimes and tenor terror Pharoah Sanders (just four days before these two would go cut Sanders’s Impulse debut, Tauhid), they give this music a sharp edge, the tightly coiled Ornette-like lines having a bit more fire to them as the band rushes out towards free jazz. But Blue Note then held back Where is Brooklyn? for another three years, making it seem buttoned-up when finally released alongside other 1969 Cherry blow-outs like Eternal Rhythm and “Mu” First Part.
