Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

Released

Jill Scott’s first album demonstrates an extremely talented singer/songwriter/poet entirely at ease playing a number of different roles from femme fatale to ingenue, from streetwise hustler to dream lover, with a voice that is at times as light as gossamer and at other times as sweet and thick as treacle. She also mixes in spoken word and semi-rapped vocals over the restrained, sparse hip hop and R’n’B keys and beats that make up the album. It’s atmospheric, poetical and an album that feels as though the singer has revealed something of themselves through the songs.
