The punningly named Dubblestandart, from Vienna, Austria, makes unapologetically contemporary reggae music that is also unapologetically steeped in the verities of old-school dub as practiced by masters like King Tubby, Dennis Bovell, and Lee “Scratch” Perry (with whom the band has fruitfully collaborated). Woman in Dub finds them working, as one would expect, with a variety of female singers from a variety of locations. The great Marcia Griffiths is here on a prime slice of lovers rock titled “Holding You Close,” and Ari Up (of punk-reggae legends the Slits) delivers a romantic plea over a driving rockers beat with “Soulmate.” Other featured singers include Coshiva, Saria Idana, and Chezere, and a generous selection of dub remixes round out the collection.
